NE women commissions to form task force

In the 'regional conference of empowerment of women: an instrument to poverty alleviation' Chairpersons of the 8 (eight) Northeastern state women commissions resolved to form a task force to oversee various women-related issues and to forward to Central government as a proposal for necessary actions.
During the conference, which was held at Regional Convention Center, Shillong, Meghalaya on 16th November 2012 Chairperson, Manipur State Commission for Women, Dr L Ibetombi Devi, initiated the proposal to form the task force and the same was accepted by all the Chairpersons and Secretaries of all the Northeastern women commission.
Chairperson of National Commission for Women, Mamata Sharma highlighted the issue of women and child trafficking in some parts of India including the NE region.
They also unanimously decided to ask the union government to empower national and state women commissions to handle various women related social issues effectively.
Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma; Social Welfare Minister J A Lyngdoh; Social Welfare Director HM Shangpliang; government officials, students and others attended the conference.
