Visually Handicapped Award presented

Imphal, March 12 2011:
The 9th Laishram Gouramani Memorial Award for Visually Handicapped 2010-11 was conferred today to Maisnam Sarankumar who had won gold medal in the 17th National Sports Met for Blind, 2010 at Panchakola, Haryana, Chandigarh.
The award was presented during a function held at Ideal Blind School, Takyel, Imphal.
The Students' Welfare Association for Blind, Takyel Imphal organised the function.
MLA Y Surchandra and Chairperson Manipur Women Development Corporation AK Mirabai graced the function as chief guest and president respectively.
Padmashree Laishram Nabakishore also attended as special invitee.
The first contender of the prestigious award which is given once in every two years was renowned blind singer Sunita Nepram whom was presented the award in 1998.The award is presented by Padmashree Laishram Nabakishore in the name of his late father Laishram Gouramani.
Speaking in the occasion, Laishram Nabakishore said that he will be presenting an award under the name Nabakishore award from next year onwards.
The contenders of the award will be chosen among those persons who marry handicapped persons.
Similar incentive scheme under the name Marriage Incentive Award is also on the card in the state which will be implemented by the Social Welfare Department.
The scheme is expected to be fully implemented by April 2011, asserted Th Dilipkumar, Assistant Commissioner (Disability), Social Welfare who attended the function as a guest.
In a speech, MLA Y Surchandra urged the association to improve technical skill and strive to live without depending on others.
He also urged to approach him without any hesitation in any issue for the welfare of the disabled persons.
Later he donated Rs 5000 to the association.
AK Mirabai also donated Rs 4900 to the association.
