Thiyam Munindrakumar, Senior Advocate, passed away yesterday after a brief illness.
He was 81.His wife, eminent social worker and politician, late Rajkumari Mukhara predeceased him on November 9, 2008 .
Thiyam Munindrakumar is survived by five sons and two daughters.
Munindrakumar was born on December 31, 1928 to late Thiyam Ibungohal and Amurima at Haobam Marak Keisam Leikai, Imphal.
He completed his I.Sc from St Anthony's College, Shillong, B Sc from Cotton College, Gauhati University in the year 1954; LLB and Local Self Government Diploma (LSGD) from Allahabad University in the year 1956 .
He started his service career in the year 1959 as Assistant Government Advocate-cum-Public Prosecutor, Manipur for the Court of Judicial Commissioner, Manipur and subordinate Courts of Manipur and thereafter became the second Senior Government Advocate-cum-Public Prosecutor (High Court), Manipur from 1975 to 1988.He retired from service in the year 1988 .
As Public Prosecutor, Manipur, he conducted more than 200 session cases with record credit and innumerable criminal appeals/revisions.
Two criminal cases conducted by Munidrakumar were awarded death sentences which were confirmed by Judicial Commissioner, Manipur.
The Capital punishments were also subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court of India.
The President rejected the Mercy petition.
Except these two cases, there has been no any other case of confirmation of death sentence in Manipur by the Supreme Court and President of India.
Thiyam Munindrakumar also served as the Member of the Advisory Board constituted under Section 9 of the National Security Act (NSA) for the state of Manipur and Nagaland; Member of the Advisory Board constituted under Section of the (a) of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1908.Besides, he was included in several High Power Committees set up by the Government from time to time.
He also worked as legal advisors to many government and non- governmental organisations.
He also served as president, All Manipur Bar Association and also as President, High Court Bar Association.
In addition to his legal profession, he served as the Chairman, Governing Body, Maharaja Bodhachandra College, Palace Compound; President, National Youth Project; President, Divine Life Society, Manipur; President, Manipur State Yoga Association; President, Sana Janmasthan Club to name a few.
