Imphal, October 08 2018:
The Congress party has alleged that the act of suspending Moirang Municipal Council for more than three months is akin to robbing the people of their rights as well as a blatant crime against democracy.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhawan today Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) general secretary (Municipality i/c) and spokesperson Kh Devabrata said that MMC was suspended by an order issued by the Under Secretary (MAHUD) on July 3 this year based on a complaint which was submitted on September 8 last year alleging that MMC was not functioning properly.
However, the failure of the State Government to do anything for reviving MMC is blatant disregard of democracy, he said and claimed that the people who filed the complaint were not councillors of MMC but were ordinary people who were not even members of MMC.
Devabrata continued that on September 13 last year, after the complaint was raised, MMC organised a meeting and ruled that the claim made by the said individuals were not reliable.
The minute proceedings of the meeting were also sent to the MMC Executive Officer (EO), he added.
However, the suspension order issued by the Government mentioned that no reply was received from the MMC which clearly shows that the EO and Chairperson are involved in the scandal, he alleged.
Explaining that the complaint raised against the MMC included various charges like rampant corruption, biasness etc, Devabrata added that on June 21 this year, before the MMC was suspended, seven Councillors filed a no-confidence motion against the Chairperson of the council.
He alleged that the act of suspending the council is uncalled for and is similar to robbing the rights of the people.
Claiming that the BJP led State Government willfully suspended the MMC out of fear, Devabrata conveyed that the Congress party strongly condemns the cowardly action of the Government.
On the other hand, MMC Congress Councillor Konjengbam Memthoi informed that MMC has been having six Congress and six BJP Councillors since January 6, 2016.BJP snatched away one of the Congress Councillor and thus formed the Council with one Mairembam Romibala as the Chairperson, she added and condemned the act of suspending the MMC.
