Imphal, November 01 2015 :
Though the Government of India and NSCN (IM) had signed the Naga Peace Accord on August 3 last and the same has been based on a framework agreement under Constitution of India, the people of Manipur are still apprehensive of the pact's effect as the contents were yet to be revealed, stated United Committee Manipur (UCM) President Elangbam Johnson on Sunday.
The UCM President made the statement during a one day discussion programme held under the theme "The people's movement for the common future of Manipur" jointly by UCM, AMUCO, CCSK and Konjeng Leikai Clubs and Organisation at Ima Haorok Konthou Lairembi Community Hall, Konjeng Mayai Leikai.
Speaking on the occasion, Johnson said, "Just as the Government of India has accepted the unique history of the Nagas, the country should also recognise and respect the 2000-year old history of the people of both the hills and valley of Manipur" .
He said Government of India can undertake developmental projects in Nagas inhabited areas of the State but it should not be implemented without consulting the Manipur Government.
The UCM President pointed out that like the Nagas in Nagaland were worried about their own State, people in Manipur are also anxious about the fate of Manipur.
Government of India interlocutor for Naga peace talks RN Ravi had on many occasions assured that the accord would not harm Manipur and its people as the same has been worked out under the Constitutional framework.
"However, if the Government of India ignores the Government of Manipur while forming possible Pan Naga Bodies or when undertaking Naga developmental projects, then people should resist the same and fight", said Johnson.
The public convention was attended by AMUCO Vice President Ph Deban, CCSK Convener, advocate Arjun Telheiba, Maya Club President Lourembam Samungou as presidium members.
Various civil society organisation leaders also spoke on the likely impact of the Naga Peace Accord.
