Imphal, December 07 2014:
The Zeliangrong Students Union Manipur (ZSUM) has said that it takes the seriousness in the rise of the number of police checkpoints in the collection of either legal or illegal taxes starting from Jirighat to Imphal.
The vehicles plying on National Highway-37 have been facing lots of problems due to taxes collected at Police/Excise checkpoints, as well as the underground organisations.
Alleging that altogether eighteen stations collect a total of Rs 12,600 per vehicle, the ZSUM said that Jirighat Foreign Gate (Rs 1500), Jiribam Police station (Rs.1500), CID Jiribam (Rs.500), Jiribam PS (Rs.1500), Commando post (Rs.1000), Excise Gularthol (Rs.500), Leingangpokpi (Rs.1900), IRB Gate Kaiphundai (Rs.200), Makru Bridge (Rs.200), Nungba PS (Rs.800), Irang Excise (Rs.300), Noney PS (Rs.800), Noney Excise (Rs.500), Senapati PS, Kotlen (Rs.500), New Keithelmanbi (Rs.500), New Keithelmanbi Excise (Rs.500), Patsoi PS (Rs.500), Patsoi Excise (Rs.500) and Commando Gate (Rs.400).
According to ZSUM, many poor people are the victims of this excessive police taxation.
The Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur also expressed its suspicion that the personnel manning the check posts/Excise points are doing it without the directive from the higher authority in collecting such huge amount from the vehicles.
ZSUM said the higher authority should instruct/direct the various police stations/checkpoints and other such stations where taxes are collected from the vehicle.
