Imphal, August 28 2012:
On the eve of Haipu Jadonang's death anniversary, Coordination Committee (CorCom) of seven underground outfits namely KCP, KYKL, PREPAK (PRO), RPF, UNLF &UPPK has conveyed its message to the people of Manipur.
In a statement, CorCom recalled that after British took over Manipur in 1891, annual taxes were levied upon the people.
The natives were used as porters to carry the goods of British officers and those who refused the ill-treatment were given severe punishment.
Haipou Jadonang, who hailed from Puilon Kabui village along Imphal-Cachar Road stood up against such ill-treatment and revolted against the British throughout the Tamenglong hill range for putting an end to the British rule and usher in a new Kabui Makam's rule administration.
As the revolt was turning out to be a serious threat to continuation of colonial rule, British arrested him and put in jail for some time.
However, on contrary to intention of suppressing the freedom movement, Jadonang won the hearts and confidence of people.
So, soon after his release from jail, Jadonang and his team intensified the revolt against the colonial ruler, the statement of CorCom said.
In fear of the revolt and its possible impact on other native people of Manipur, British conspired to arrest him again.
After he was arrested from Cachar, Jadonang was brought to Imphal and later hanged him to death before the public on August 29, 1931.Remembering this day, the martyrdom of Haipou Jadonang is observed every year throughout the state, the statement added.
Observing that all the native people of Manipur are inseparable and dependable to each other, the statement appealed for strengthening the bond of unity and brotherhood among the native people.
Let's learn the lessons from the brave forefather and pay respect to Haipu Jadonang by following the path shown by him, CorCom exhorted.
