AMSU celebrates foundation day

Imphal, August 28 2012: The All Manipur Students' union (AMSU) celebrated its 47th foundation day today at the DM college campus head office of the students' organisation, where a blood donation camp was also organised to mark the occasion.

After hoisting the AMSU flag by its president Thokchom Suresh, founder general secretary gurumayum Joykumar Sharma, in his address as the chief guest highlighted that consequent to movements launched by students, various indiscretions and ills afflicting the society had been exposed or remedied to a significant extent.

Exhorting the student community to strive for not only educational excellence but to contribute for social reforms, he reminded that AMSU as well as other student organisations have far more important roles to play in the near future, particularly in strengthening the age-old relationships amongst different communities settled in the State.

Joykumar also recounted the violent crackdown on student agitators, who were protesting artificial scarcity of food-grains on August 27, 1965, as the chief cause for the formation of AMSU.

Kuki Students' Organisation president Peter H Mate in his address emphasised on unity amongst the student bodies to achieve the goal of quality education in Manipur.

Pointing out that unified movements launched by student activists/bodies had brought about effective and desired results on a number of important issues, he prevailed upon all concerned to work for unity among the student organisations.

Delivering the presidential address of the celebration, Thokchom Suresh sought support and cooperation of all the organisations in order to follow the path shown by former leaders of AMSU.

Among others, former functionaries of Manipur University Students' Union, AMSU and Muslim Students' union of Manipur also attended the event.

The foundation day celebration was also organised by AMSU, Jiribam District Committee at its office in the Imphal East sub-divisional headquarters.

AMSU advisor E Dewan and the Committee's president N Kirankumar were the chief guest and functional president respectively of the celebration, also attended by around 100 social activists and intellectuals of Jiribam.
