1st phase of Governor's initiative for Green Manipur concludes

The present generation have a huge role to play in conserving and creating awareness on protection of trees for the future generation.
This was stated by Governor Dr Najma Heptulla at the closing function of 'The Governor's Initiative for Green Manipur' 1st Phase held at Nongmeibung Multipurpose Hall today.
The Function was jointly organised by Green Planters' Society, ESC, Citizens Club, Wal United and GPS.
The Governor appreciated the collective manner in which the locals joined hands with the Assam Rifles for tree plantation across the State.
The Governor expressed her happiness to be associated with the tree plantation and reminded the gathering that last year on Guru Puja, she- had planted more than more hundred trees at Raj Bhavan.
She also stated the temperature is gradually rising day by day along with unusual rain indicating climate change.
She further said that for a tree sapling planted today, it will take at least 50 years to beicpme a full grown tree and appealed to the people to plants trees in any events related to members of the family such as child birth, weddings, occasions of family events and also to respect and give something back to the mother earth.
The State ranked eight in Biodiversity ranking index in the world, we should keep and preserve the diversity for the next generation, she added.
She also urged the public to create a women group for the protection of trees and also to nurture them just as children are cared for and nurtured.
Citing an example of a movement in Delhi and other parts of the country where thousands of trees are cut down, the group approached Supreme Court for protection of trees.
The Governor also appreciated Forest Minister, Th Shyamkumar for taking the initiative in safe guarding the forest areas and keeping the land green.
She also encouraged citizens of the State to plant trees.
She said that if each individual plant one tree in a year, we will have additional 28 lakhs of trees per year in the State.
The Governor urged the media fraternity to continue in spreading awareness about the importance of conserving and protecting of trees to the masses.
Forest & MAHUD Minister, Th Shyamkumar Singh attending the function as guest of honour said that in the name of urbanisation and developmental projects, trees are being cut down trees which were planted by our forefathers.
To fight climate change and for safeguarding the environment, we need to care and maintain the trees which are still growing in the land and also plant more tress in our localities, he added.
As part of the programme, the dignitaries planted tree saplings at Konungmamang.
In connection with the 'Governor's Initiative for Green Manipur, '1st Phase' Citizens' Club and Chapram Leirak Development Committee stood first and second position.
Wal United Club and Nongmeibung Women Developmerit Meira Paibi Association were given Best Supporters award while ESC was given Best Supporter & Organiser awards.
The closing function was attended by MLA of Wangkhei A/C, O Henry as guest of honour, Brig Amit Kabthiyal, SM, DIG ,9 Sector, AR as special Invitee, N Indrajit Singh, President, ESC, O Priyokumar Singh, President, Citizens' Club, N Babu Singh, President, Wal United Club and RK Priyobarta, President, GPS as dunctional presidents respectively.
