Imphal, June 28 2018:
Recalling the state of Emergency imposed throughout the country by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, BJP Manipur Pradesh has asserted that Congress party has been still challenging democracy in the country.
Speaking to media persons at their Nityaipat Chuthek office today, BJP Manipur Pradesh spokesman Ch Bijoy said that Congress has always been challenging the principles of democracy in their crooked efforts to cling to power.
Since its establishment, Congress party has also been in 'Emergency mode'.
It was late Indira Gandhi's attempt to take complete control of Congress which led to a vertical split in the party, Bijoy said.
Moreover, capitalising on the dominance of Parliament by Congress during those days, Indira Gandhi made another forceful attempt to bring trie Judiciary under her thumb.
But the Congress leader encountered a formidable obstacle in the form of a Supreme Court judgement passed in 1967.Moreover there are certain basic chapters of the Indian Constitution and fundamental rights it guarantees which cannot be amended by the Parliament.
Even as the then Congress Government made all efforts to amend Article 368 of the Constitution, another order issued by the Supreme Court did not allow the Prime Minister and the Government to go for any such amendment, Bijoy said.
Nonetheless, Congress party, by virtue of enjoying majority in the Parliament and driven by their intention to amend the Constitution, appointed one Justice AN Ray as the Chief Justice of India.
On the other hand, it was during the time of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee that the Anti-Defection Law was passed in the Parliament.
It was this Anti-Defection Law which gave rise to stable Governments both at the Centre and States, said the BJP spokesman.
Whether the Congress party would be able to survive in the country after the forthcoming Parliamentary election is a big question, he added.
