18th Fish Farmers' Day : Self-sufficiency in fish production a priority: N Kayisii

Fisheries Minister N Kayisii stated that Manipur produces 32,000 metric tonnes of fish against the annual estimated requirement of 52,000 metric tonnes.
The Minister made the statement as chief guest at the 18th Fish Farmers' Day held at the complex of Fisheries Department today at Lamphelpat.
Kayisii stressed on the need for a concerted effort to be on the right track towards attaining self-sufficiency in fish production.
Acknowledging the shortfalls faced by the department, He assured the department staff as well fish farmers that he will apprise the Chief Minister for more fund allocations to benefit fish farmers both in hill and valley districts.
A booklet published by the Department of Fisheries titled "Better Management Practices for Fish Culture" was also released during the function.
During the function, prizes were distributed to three winners and 20 consolation prize winners of the Annual Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition held last year.
Tongbram Raghu Singh, Heisnam Rabi Singh and Salam Sushilkumar- all from Bishnupur won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Main Fish Crop category winning a cash prize of Rupees 1 lakh, Rs 70,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
Heisnam Rabi Singh also walked away with a cash prize of Rs 20,000 as the winner for Indigenous Fish Producer.
Consolation prizes were also given to 20 participants ofthe competition with a cash prize of Rs 20,000 each.
T Shyamananda, DFO-Bishnupur and Kh Ibetombi Devi, DFO-Churachandpur also received a cash reward of Rs 10,000 each as the winner of district officers with highest fish producer among valley and hill districts respectively.
M Luikham, Secretary (Fishery) and H Biramani Singh, Director, Department of Fisheries also attended the function as functional president and guest of honour respectively.
Since 2001, the July 10 has been observed as Fish Farmers Day in the country to encourage and give tribute to the endeavours of fish farmers in the country.
