Greater Imphal will get adequate drinking water in six months: PHE Minister

Imphal, November 04 2018: Water treatment plants under construction in Imphal Greater area will be completed within six months to curb water shortages the city is currently facing, said PHE Minister L Dikho.

The PHE Minister said this during inspections at water supply treatment plants in Imphal East and West today.

PHED Chief Engineer (Urban) H Sunil, SE (urban) Ksh Lalitbabu, EE T Arun, EE Ksh Laksaheb and EE I Gojendro accompanied the Minister during the visits.

Speaking during the visits, the Minister said that the present Government started constriction of 10 water treatment plants at various places in Greater Imphal area from 2017.The constructions were taken up to facilitate supply of adequate drinking water to the city.

The people of the city have been facing water shortage for quite long.

All these will end in six months time, he said assuring that the water treatment plants, when finished, will provide ample adequate drinking water to the people of Greater Imphal.

Almost all the plants are near completion (60%) .

The more than 40 years old pipes in and around the city are in bad shape.

New and better pipes will be used scrapping the old ones for proper conduction of water, he said.

The Government is currently working for procuring funds and loans from outside companies for fitting of the pipelines, he said.

"The Government is planning to renew all pipelines in the State and provide adequate drinking water by 2022," he said.

PHED Chief Engineer (Urban) H Sunil said that the department is seeing the rapid work progress on the sites of the treatment plants.

The constructions will be completed soon and the plants will be able to provide sufficient drinking water to the masses in Imphal, he said.

He further sought the attention of the public no to fell trees and forests.

Deforestation has adverse effect on climate and water sources, he said.

With more water supply/treatment plants at strategic places in hills and valleys, the State will have ample stock of water for its people, he said.
