Imphal, November 21 2018:
The State Government's keen effort to make Imphal clean and tidy during the Manipur Sangai Festival hit a major wall today as the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) announced that it is boycotting the grand festival which began today.
As in last year, the Government and departments concerned have been decorating the city and the venues before the arrival of the many delegates from other States and foreign countries.
It was reported that Thailand Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will attend the festival here.
The Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) will not be discharging its duty of cleaning the city from today, said IMC Corporators' spokesperson P Nutanchandra during a press meet held today at the office of Opposition Corporators of IMC.
Giving reason for the boycott, the spokesperson said that the decision was taken to demonstrate protest against alleged discrimination met towards the Corporators by the State Tourism Department.
"The State Tourism Department ignored the role of IMC.
They gave us the invitation for the Sangai Festival only this morning," he said.
The Corporators are even deprived of car pass, he alleged and accused the Tourism Department of insulting the IMC Corporators and showing step motherly treatment.
TMC has been taking a pivotal role in the State/city by keeping the Imphal City neat and clean.
They (Tourism Department) should never treat us lowly," Nutanchandra said.
The spokesperson further said that the mvitation card of the Sangai Festival will be returned back to the authority concerned to mark IMC's protest against the alleged discriminating attitude shown towards the IMC Corporators and staffs.
