Protesting violence against women : WAD reaches out to Kharam community

Women Action for Development (WAD) reached out to the community of Kharam as part of the ongoing observation of International Fortnight Observation Protesting Violehce Against Women during the annual assembly of Youth Department of Kharam Tribe at Keithelmanbi today.
During the assembly, Saiphu Ringneiphun, Program Coordinator of WAD stressed on the importance of women in the society and emphasized on the protection of children especially girls.
He talked about the 'Protection of Children From Sexual Offence Act, 2012' and the 'Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006' and requested the community to respect the rule of law and appealed the community not to settle issues of sexual violence and violence against women as per the customary law.
Members of WAD also distributed leaflets and reading materials which cover said acts and laws.
The program was attended by Sh Darsinthang, secretary of Kharam Youth Department, Kharam Baptist Churches Association (KBCA); Sh Remneishin, secretary of Women Department, KBCA and other community elders of Kharam Tribe, said a press release of Women Action for Development; Members and volunteers of WAD (Women Action for Development) from Imphal East and Imphal West District also kicked off posters and leaflet campaigns, it said while adding that WAD will continue to reach out to various communities and posters and leaflet distribution will be carried out during the 16 days long observation which
ends on December 10 .
