Imphal, October 09 2019:
When State film makers and producers are making record number of digital films a year, cinema hall, which was once a thriving and profitable business, is becoming a thing of the past as several of them like Usha Cinema, Pratap Talkies, Victory Cinema, Mini Friends and Imphal Talkies have shut their businesses due to financial constraint or other reasons.
Speaking to this reporter, Laishram Sanatomba, owner of Friends Talkies and president of United Cine Exhibitors' Association of Manipur, said that Friends Talkies which was established in 1924 is the only running cinema hall in Imphal, today.

With dwindling number of cinema goers, the fate of Friends Talkies, which once screened movies like Olangthagee Wangamdasu; Saphabi and Lamja Pashuram, is uncertain and may be closed anytime, Sanatomba said.
The one of the oldest cinema halls is functioning for its love of cinema, he said expressing that Friends Talkies is not making any profit like it used to before.
Cinema halls in Imphal used to screen 3 films a day at ease, with many of them making houseful ticket sales.
Today, 10 out of 11 halls in Imphal have stopped screening films.
Cinema halls in other districts have also been hit, he said expressing the need for Government intervention in the matter to save and revive the cinema halls.
"Majority of cinema halls are not able to run 7 days a week and if the current trend continues, cinema halls in Manipur might become another folklore," he said.
He identified presence of too many "self-claimed policymakers" and charity shows as few of the many reasons for downfall of the cinema halls in the State.
Success of Manipuri film industry requires booming cinema halls.
Cinema halls should be recognised as integral part of Manipur film industry, he said urging Government and all concerned to do the needful and formulate sound policy for its revival.
