Imphal, July 20:
Notwithstanding the State administration order to close down all schools located in Imphal area, thousands of students came out in droves to surrender their text books to the Governor today in protest against the cease fire extension to Manipur.
From early morning thousands of students streamed into the AMSU Hqs.
The students, including students from MU, Central Agricultural University and Law College started from the AMSU Hqs in a mammoth rally to surrender their text books to the Governor at about 1 pm.
The rally wound its way through Khoyathong road, Nagamapal and then turned towards Khwairamband bazar through Shamu Makhong.
The rally was stopped from proceeding forward at the Shamu Makhong.
DC Imphal West, Imocha Singh and top police officials were personally present.
The DC implored with the students to hand over the text books to him so that he can pass on the same to the Governor.
He made it clear that the students would not be allowed to proceed upto Raj Bhawan.
A compromise formula to send a delegate to surrender the text books to the Governor was at first accepted by some of the student leaders but had to be made it clear that the students would not be allowed to proceed upto Raj Bhawan.
Thereafter a bitter stand off ensued with the DC and Imphal West SP on one side and the student leaders on the other.
Finally a compromise was arrived and a 22 member delegates led by the AMSU president-in-charge M Ingo proceeded towards Raj Bhawan.
However when the students reached Raj Bhawan, security personnel stopped them at the gate.
After about half an hour, DC Imphal West Imocha, Governor's Secretary RK Angousana, Governor's ADC Bimol and Deputy Secretary Yaima came out to meet the students at the gate of Raj Bhawan.
