Imphal, May 05 2021:
In a shocking incident, the corpse of a 78-year-old Covid positive man was found already cremated when family members came to collect the same at JNIMS Hospital today.
The man from Imphal East district reportedly succumbed to COVID-19 in the wee hours today at JNIMS.
The family members alleged that the body first went missing for a while in the hospital and they later came to know that it was cremated without their consent.
The family came to know of the incident when they arrived at the hospital after getting the necessary permits from the district administration to claim the body for cremation at their locality.
The deceased person's son-in-law said his father-in-law was admitted at JNIMS Covid Ward on May 3 after he tested positive for coronavirus.

After his father-in-law passed away in the early hours today, JNIMS authority had asked the family members to decide whether they want to cremate the body at their locality or hand it over to the district administration.
The son-in-law stated that the family members had obtained all the necessary permits/documents from the district administration and consent of the locality to cremate the body at their local crematorium as per the Government protocol.
They arrived at JNIMS with permits in the afternoon only to find the corpse missing, he said.
Decrying that the negligence of JNIMS authority has put the family members to utter shock, he demanded that a departmental enquiry into the incident be conducted and terminate the persons responsible.
Meanwhile, when contacted JNIMS Director Dr Th Bhimo, he said an enquiry committee has been set up to investigate the incident after Advisor to Chief Minister (Health) Dr Sapam Ranjan and JNIMS authority held a meeting today.
The facts and details about the incident can be established only when the enquiry has been conducted thoroughly, he said.
When asked whether the dead body was disposed of due to mix-up, the Director denied such and said an attendant who was directly involved in handing over the dead body is yet to be questioned or communicated.
