Imphal, November 01 2012:
Under instructions from the All India Congress Committee, Home Minister Gaikhangam has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur.
An order to this effect was issued by the Chief Secretary this evening.
Other than Home, Gaikhangam also holds the portfolios of Tribal Development and Hills and Horticulture and
Soil Conservation.
This is the first time that Manipur will have a Deputy Chief Minister after the United Front Government, which had Dr L Chandramani as the Deputy Chief Minister with the late W Nipamacha as the Chief Minister.
|
Elected from Nungba Assembly Constituency, this is the first time that Gaikhangam will occupy the post of Deputy Chief Minister.
During the first innings of the Congress led SPF Government, Gaikhangam was the Works Minister, but refused a Ministerial position when the SPF came back to power after the 2007 election.
