The 24-hr bandh called by Thadou Students' Association (TSA) General Headquarters in protest against the alleged indifferent attitude of Commanding Officer, 7th IRB towards the incident of knocking down of an Alto car and injuring 6 occupants in between Khonghampat and Koirengei on 16 June by his convoy vehicle affected normal life along the ImphalMoreh Section of National Highway No.102 today.
A large number of bandh supporters mostly belonging to TSA, Chandel District came out on the streets and enforced the bandh along the ImphalMoreh section of National Highway No.102 at H.Kotlenphai Village
in Chandel District.
Armed with sticks, the bandh supporters blocked the road by piling up woods and tree branches to prohibit private and passenger vehicles from proceeding to Imphal.
During the bandh, the windshield of a red colour car bearing MNO3A 2172 was damaged by the bandh enforcers as the occupants in the vehicle insisted on proceeding against the request of the bandh supporters.
The bandh supporters also vandalised one civilian Gypsy which came by taking advantage of coverage by a convoy of security forces.
While briefing media persons, James Haokip, General Secretary TSA General Head Quarter strongly condemned the attitude of the Commanding Officer for not showing any regrets and concern for the injured persons which include an active member of the students' body.
James Haokip also clarified that the statement of the Commanding Officer of 7th IRB published in some local dailies was baseless as the story of the incident was twisted by him.
He also said that, all the facts about the incident were recorded by the Investigating Officer of the Police Station concerned at the time of the incident.
The students' body also possesses all the details including photos taken at the spot of the incident, said the General Secretary.
While appealing to all to co-operate in ensuring justice to the victims, the General Secretary also expressed apprehension that the government might sideline the issue as a police officer (Commanding Officer of 7th IRB) was involved in the case.
Haokip further said that adequate time was given to bring amicable solution, but the Commanding Officer failed to reciprocate, thus compelling the students' body to raise the issue at the State level.
"We will now negotiate at the levels of Director General of Police and Home Minister only to bring amicable solution", the General Secretary added.
