Expressing deep shock over the systematic targeting of Christians in Orissa by the VHP and fundamentalists after VHP leader Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati was allegedly killed by suspected Maoists on August 23, all Christian institutions in Manipur will remain closed tomorrow.
In a statement, the Archbishop of Imphal, Rev Dominic Lumon DD said that the Catholic Church and the Archbishop strongly condemn the dastardly acts of violence unleashed against the Christian minorities in Kandhamal district of Orissa.
To register their protest all educational and other institutions under the aegis of Archdiocese of Imphal will remain closed tomorrow, August 29, added the statement.
The Baptist Churches in Manipur too will close their institutions tomorrow in compliance with the call issued by the National Council of Churches in India, the apex body of Baptist Churches in the country, All India Christian Council, Evangelical Fellowship of India and the Catholic Bishops' Conference.
In a message issued on behalf of all Baptist Churches in Manipur, Rev Vumthang Sitlhou has appealed to all for peaceful co-existence and not to target anyone along religious affiliation.
