Under its action plan for the year 2008-09, the All Manipur Students' Union will be focussing on bringing quality education in the State.
During its 43rd foundation day observed in the hall of DM College of Science today, the student body announced its activities planned for 2008-09 .
It will be paying extra attention to Manipur University, Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur, Board of Secondary Education Manipur and State Council for Education, Research and Training.
The student body will also be looking into the rationalisation policy of the Education Department besides organising coaching programmes, seminars, workshops etc.
In addition to launching anti-drug campaigns in schools and setting up anti-drug committees together with students and teachers, AMSU will take up a campaign on the issue of indigenous people and migrants.
Further, the student body will pay extra attention to development programmes taken up in hill districts, health sector and construction works taken up in educational institutions.
After the students' movement of August 27, 1965 against artificial famine, students of the time set up AMSU on the next day (August 28) of the same year.
Today's foundation day observance was graced by Principal Secretary P Saratchandra, AMSU president Khamba Laishram, secretary of the All Assam Manipuri Students' Union M Bhagat, chairman of North East Manipuri Students' Organisation Oinam Maniton and Principal of DM College of Science G Tomba as presidium members.
In his address, P Saratchandra called upon students to face the existing challenges with sincerity.
Saying that AMSU was set up after bloodshed, Khamba Laishram called upon AMSU volunteers to act in compliance with its motto.
As in the preceding years, AMSU would be always in the forefront in every movement/issue confronting the State, Khamba said.
Our Jiribam correspondent adds: The 43rd foundaion of AMSU was also observed by AMSU District Committee Jiribam in its conference hall at Babupara, Jiri today.
To mark the occasion, candles were lighted at the junction of main streets.
