Extrajudicial killings::: Holal Haokip found involved in 6 cases

On the fourth and final day of inquiry being conducted by the Supreme Court appointed three-member independent Inquiry Commission headed by former Supreme Court Justice N Santosh Hegdre at Vigysan Bhawan, New Delhi today, three respondent witnesses were cross-examined by the petitioners' counsel.
The three respondent witnesses who were cross-examined today were SP of Senapati district Pushpanjali; Jemadar Holal Haokip and ASI L Birbabu.
During the course of cross examination, Jemadar Holal Haokip was found to have been involved in five other cases of extra alleged extra-judicial killings apart from the Chittaranjan case at Yaingangpokpi.
On being crossed examined by the petitioners' counsel over his transfer from Manipur Police Commandos to Manipur Rifles, it was found that he was transferred after his involvement in the Satish Loitongbam case of May 2009 .
On being questioned further, Holal Haokip admitted that he was placed under suspension for seven months after his involvement in the Satish Loitongbam case and was later transferred to Manipur Rifles.
In connection with the Satish Loitongbam's case, Holal Haokip stated that after the incident, he came to Lamlai Police Station and handed over the seizure memo and informed them to retrieve the dead body.
On being asked whether he had made any sketches of the dead body at the spot, Holal replied in negative and said that he could not recall the exact position in which the dead body was lying when he had left it.
The Commission also brought out related documents of the other cases in which he was allegedly involved.
In February and April 2001, he was found involved in two cases and in January 2001 he got involved in the case of Khumukcham Thoiba.
He was also found involved in the case of Umakanta along with the personnel of 23 AR.
A discussion over the cases which have been cross-examined during the nine-day long hearing, five days at Imphal and four days at Delhi, would be held on March 19 and 20 after which a full report will be submitted to the concerned authorities.
