Like in other parts of the globe, Human Rights Day was observed by various organisations working for the cause of human rights marking the United Nations General Assembly adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
The observances held under the theme "Human rights defenders who act to end discrimination" was marked by seminars and discussions on ending the conflict situation in the state resulting in large scale violations of human rights.
The 'arrest' of UNLF chairman RK Meghen, prolonged violations of the rights of the civil populace as a result of armed conflict, status of human rights under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, Sharmila's lone struggle for repeal of the Act and conditions of victims of torture by state and non-state actors were the main highlights of the observance function at different places.
Sixteen human rights and indigenous peoples' rights organisations collectively observed the day with a discussion on the status of human rights in the state under AFSPA at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound.
Human rights defenders who spoke on the occasion observed gross violations of fundamental human rights in the state and said that such violations have been going on unabated both by state and non-state actors.
They lamented that the people of Manipur have been victims of prolonged armed conflict.
There should be an end to this conflict situation.
Otherwise, people will continue to be victims.
Dr Arambam Lokendro, who presided over the function, focused on the gross violations of rights of civilians in the conflict riddled state and raised the poser how long will the people of the state live without getting the rights of a human being.
Despite the hue and cry of the people for their rights, violation of rights of the people is unabated, he said.
On the occasion, mother of Thangjam Manorama, Khuman Leima released a Manipuri translated booklet of "UN Declaration on Human Rights".
A one minute silence was observed to pay respect to those human rights defenders who sacrificed their lives in defending human rights.
'Stormy Journey Retour' a dance composition of the artistes of the Nachom Arts was also staged at the concluding part of the function.
Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) also observed the day at the conference hall of the District and Sessions Court, Uripok.
Executive chairman of MSLSA and judge of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal bench T Nandakumar graced the function as chief guest.
Retired justice M Binoykumar presided over the function in which MSLSA member secretary attended as guest of honour.
The day was also observed at Royal Academy of Law, Oinam with additional director, Education (U), RK Yaiskulsana as chief guest.
A newsletter on Human Rights Day was released by the chief guest during the function.
