In connection with the seizure of red sandal wood worth Rs 1.96 crores by troops of 5 Assam Rifles last year from a Moreh-based businessman, Income Tax Department conducted a spot enquiry today.
However, the businessman was found to have already fled away with the house locked from outside.
As a team of Income Tax officials led by Additional Commissioner of Imphal Range LD Mate went to Moreh today to conduct a spot enquiry, ,manager of the M/S AL Barique and Sons, Moreh, Md Abdul Barique was found already gone.
In addition to seizure of red sandal wood worth Rs 1.96 crores, Md Barique was also not paying income tax returns for last year.
Nevertheless, the team led by the Additional Commissioner of Income Tax held a meeting with representatives of the Moreh Chamber of Commerce on payment of income tax returns.
The team also met Customs Superintendent.
