Kangpokpi, October 24 2018:
Taking into account the acute hardships faced by the general public of Motbung, the only Model Village in Kangpokpi District, and its vicinity due to lack of banking service, the Thadou Students' Association called for setting up a Nationalized bank at the Model village.
Michael Lamjathang Haokip, Secretary General, TSA said that Motbung village is one of the oldest Thadou villages in Kangpokpi district and it is also one of the fastest growing villages with dense population along National Highway with more than 2000 households and 70 surrounding villages in the periphery of the village while adding that it is a commercial hub with a strategic location.
However, the people in and around the village are deprived of banking services so far, said Michael while adding that setting up of a Nationalized Bank branch is highly required in the larger interest of the general public.
He continued that the Deputy Commissioner, Kangpokpi has already been intimated by the student body through a representation highlighting the grievances of the public due to the absent of banking services and the requirement of opening a Nationalized Bank while a copy of the representation was also sent to the Social Welfare and Coop Minister, Chief Secretary/Principal Secretary (Finance), Government of Manipur, the Convenor of State Level Bankers Committee, Manipur and Chief of Motbung village.
"Motbung was affected with political war and was neglected due to political disadvantage.
The people have been victimized and are at the receiving end.
People should not be deprived of banking facilities due to such political disadvantage.
As per banking principle, banks should be opened in all deserving and eligible places", said the TSA leader.
He also said that the State Bank of India has a Customer Service Point (CSP) at Motbung to facilitate its customers but it is not functioning properly and it does not serve its purpose thereby creating more troubles to the customers with its limited services with extra, charges applicable while adding that such CSP is no longer sufficient enough for the people of Motbung rather it needs for a Nationalized Bank having more facilities and services.
He further said that as an educational hub, due to the presence of Presidency College, the only government college in Kangpokpi district, eight high schools, Damdei Christian college, Government offices like Primary Health Centre, Forest Range Office, Post Office, Electricity Office, Army Camp and Police Outpost which are also located at Motbung Village, thousands of students and employees have been struggling for banking services.
He also recalled that Social Welfare & Cooperation Minister had already intimated the finance department of the state for discussion in the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC), last year while the Manipur Rural Bank (MRB) has also initiated and processed formalities to set-up its new branch at Motbung, but TSA had opposed the said bank due to limited services provided by them.
"Motbung is a Model Village since 2016 adopted by Thangso Baite, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) scheme sponsored by Ministry of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Govt of India and as per the guidelines of the scheme, financial inclusion for all is a must", Michael Lamjathang Haokip added.
Considering the circumstances and hardships of the people, the student body urged the authority concerned to set up a new bank branch from any Nationalized bank preferably the State Bank of India at Motbung, he added.
