The 124th birth anniversary of Laininghan Naoriya Phulo, who sacrificed his life for the upliftment of Meetei culture, was observed all over the state along with organising various events today.
Speaking at the 2nd State Level Recitation Competition of Naoriya Phulo's Poem at Akampat, Director of Art and Culture K Sobita highlighted the importance of doctrines and ideology of Naoriya Phulo as the last resort to save Manipuri culture and tradition.
In the present context of Manipuri, propagating the doctrines and ideology of Phulo, who sacrificed his life for the upliftment of Meetei culture is very important for preserving the unique identity of Meetei tradition, she said.
Sobita observed that with the advent of modernisation, there is a looming threat over Meetei culture, and at this point of time, it is an unavoidable need to propagate his messages to the entire community.
Meisnam Shivadutta Luwang, Editor Huieyen Lanpao (Meetei Mayek), who attended the function as Guest of Honour, said, "27 Meetei Maichous were born in Manipur and with the help of these Maichous various kings who reigned before 1709 were able to govern Manipuri kingdom peacefully and prosperously".
However, with the arrival of "forceful Hindunisation after 1709, the people were hypnotized until the birth of new seer, Laininghan Naoriya Phulo in 1888 at Cachar's Jaribond.
On account of his priceless contribution towards revival of Meetei culture and religion, Phulo has been considered to be the 28th prophet.
He also expressed desire for according the title of "Father of Meetei Nation" to Phulo, and added that it is our duty and responsibility to study the works of Phulo just as Russians and Chineses followed the path of Karl Marx and Dr Sun Yat Sen respectively.
Prof W Nabakumar, Dean of School of Human and Environment Science, Manipur University, who was also present and spoke at the occasion, opined that when we celebrate the anniversary of Phulo, feedback from general public should be taken note of so as to make necessary changes in organising such commemorative events effective and more purposefully in the years to come.
