Police takes five day remand of rapist cobbler

Police have taken a five day remand of the 69-year-old cobbler, arrested on the charge raping a minor girl of nine years, after he was produced in the court of Imphal West duty magistrate on Sunday.
Thokchom Menjor of Khangabok of Thoubal district, was taken into custody yesterday by the police after he was handed over by the locals of Sugnu.
Villagers caught him red-handed while raping the 9-year-old daughter of the owner of the house where he lived on rent.
He has been booked under section 376 of the IPC and was produced in the court of the duty magistrate today with the prayer for a five day remand into police custody for further investigation into the alleged charge against him.
Police, however, said that whether the girl was raped or not could be confirmed only after a medical examinationwhich will be done tomorrow (Monday) at the RIMS forensic department.
Villagers caught Menjor yesterday around 1 pm when the girl screamed for help.
The widowed mother of the girl, and her elder daughter rushed to the room of the tenant on hearing the screams amd found the girl in a state of shock.
Irate villagers beat up Menjor and handed him over to Sugnu police station.
Tension still prevails in the area as villagers once again attempted to set ablaze the house today but an already alerted Sugnu police foiled the bid and kept the house under police protection.
