Imphal, June 07 2012: Stepping anti-liquor drive, villagers of Talui in Ukhrul district caught six persons involved in transporting 400 litres of local made liquor into the village from Andro and shaved off their heads.

Two other locals who were also involved in selling of liquor in the village were also punished in similar manner.

The six bootleggers including a woman were rounded up by volunteers of Talui Shanalong, Takui Reisang Youth Club and Talui Students on June 6 while unloading the liquors brought in a van (MN06L 0284) at two local drinking joints.

Subsequently, the volunteers also rounded up the owners of the two local drinking joints.

Afterward, all eight of them were tonsured and caned 50 times each.

They were also fined Rs 5000 each before being released.

After the incident was brought to the notice of All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA), the seized liquors were burnt at Talui village yesterday.

Speaking to media persons at the occa who were also present at the liquor burning occasion yesterday, VS Wungmino, President, Talui Shanalong informed that one Chingakham Dhana to whom the seized liquor belong to work as a carpenter in Talui village.

Taking undue advantage of his acquaintances with the villagers, he had been transporting huge quantity of liquor to the village, although liquor has been banned in the village for a long time.

The villagers have been laying in wait for the opportune moment to catch him red handed and the chance came yesterday.

Some of the villagers even wanted to finish him off.

But considering the tensions which would erupt between two communities, the village authorities prevented from such happenings, he added.

He further appealed to all concerned not to transport liquor in the village and warned that those who defy the verdict of village authority themselves be held responsible for any eventuality.

Speaking on the occasion, Ph Phony, General Secretary, AMADA said that abuse of drugs and alcohol not only affect a particular community but all the communities in a society.

But prevention of drug abuse and alcoholism cannot only be controlled by a single organization.

So, people of all the communities should come together and fight against this social menace.

He further informed that if the villagers are willing, AMADA can help in organizing academic awareness programme, free medical camp and sporting events to encourage youths to stay away from drugs.
