Diarrhoea claims one at Jiri

One person died and 43 others were hospitalized due to an outbreak of suspected diarrhoea in Chotubeghra area in Jiribam subdivision, Imphal East district.
Health Minister of Phungzathang Tonsing rushed to Jiribam along with the Additional Director, Health Department and Director, Family Welfare Department to take stock of the situation.
People started suffering from the illness for the last few days in Jiribam subdivision and were brought to the Jiribam subdivisional hospital in large number for medical treatment, said a source.
One person has reportedly died due to the illness while 43 were hospitalized for treatment at Jiribam sub-divisional hospital.
Seven of the sick persons who have been hospitalized for medical treatment are said to be in serious condition.
The State Health Minister is reported to have visited the Jiribam subdivisional hospital where the sick persons are being given medical treatment and has given them some financial assistance for their medical treatment.
He also assured that the Jiribam subdivisional hospital will be upgraded to a 50 bedded hospital, and necessary arrangements will be made to supply hygienic drinking water to the public of Jiribam soon.
The outbreak of diarrhoea is suspected to have been caused by consuming contaminated water.
Our Correspondent adds from Jiribam : On his maiden venture to the sub-division, Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing visited Jiribam today inspecting the Community Health Centre (CHC), Jiribam.
The Minister has instructed the medical staff to perform their duty sincerely while assuring them that every facility would be provided to the Centre in order to cater the medical need of the surrounding residents including providing adequate doctors.
Interacting with the media, Phungzathang assured the upgradation of the 25-bedded CHC into a 50-bedded hospital in a span of one year.
The Minister also distributed Rs 500 each to all the patients being hospitalised at the CHC today.
