Imphal, February 22 2019:
Crying for strict legal action against the three alleged perpetrators including a police officer for beating three innocent individuals on the night of February 20 at Kairenphabi, JAC formed against the incident today condemned the incident and denounced the police action.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, today, convenor of the JAC Nongmaithem Iboton said one of the victims identified as Nongmaithem Henin (28) of Kumbi Mayai Leikai received serious head injury.
According to Wahengbam Roshan (28), s/o Wahengbam Thoiba of Kumbi Kangjeibung Mapal, on February 20 night, the three of them including Nongmaithem Henin and Nongmaithem David were on their way to receive/look out for his brother who had gone to Imphal for some personal business.
His brother had phoned him at around 8.30 pm to collect him as he missed the last bus.
The three were on their way on a two wheeler (Access scooter) and stopped at Thanga Lawai - Kairenphabi area for a quick call to Roshan's brother.
As they started to drive again, two men identified as Tongbram Samananda (40), s/o T Jatra arid Laishram Raghumani (50), s/o L Ibomcha of Kairenphabi allegedly approached their vehicle, stopped them and 'slapped Roshan who was driving the scooter without any reason' .
The two were under the influence of alcohol, alleged Roshan.
N David, who knows Laishram Samananda, tried to intervene and plead the two to stop abusing them when Raghumani struck Henin's head with a heavy object, alleged Roshan.
They were stopped from calling for help, alleged Roshan and continued that they contacted an elder of their locality when womenfolk of the area intervened after sometime.
Samananda, who was among the two who beat them, then called the police and surprisingly, the police instead of picking up the two perpetrators throw the three of them into their vehicle, alleged Roshan.
The police then took them to Moirang Hospital for treatment where Henin received 4/ 5 stitches on the head, he said.
"David and I also underwent medical check up and we were asked to wait outside the hospital room as we received minor injuries," he said.
"Henin who was undergoing treatment inside the room called for us.
David, after taking permission from the police driver, went inside the room to attend to Henin.
ASI Azad then beat David in front of the doctor and nurses," he claimed.
The ASI even threatened to lock them up at Keibul Police Station, alleged Roshan and added that they were released after one social worker Khangembam Surdas requested the police.
N Henin is currently undergoing treatment at JNIMS, said Roshan.
Appealing the Chief Minister and the Police Department to take serious action against the police officer and the two involved in the incident, the JAC cautioned that it will take up intense agitations if actions are not taken up and justice is not done on or before February 28.The incident was reported to SDPO Moirang on February 21 and arrest of two individuals are reported, said convenor of the JAC Nongmaithem Iboton.
