Validation workshop

Imphal, April 21 2016:
The first day of the 2-day validation work-
shop on indigenous women and domestic work here at Manipur
University started to discuss the issues of unregulated domestic
workers particularly the young boys and girls in North Eastern
states.
Most of the speakers in the day's workshop which was
organized by the Centre for study of social exclusion and
inclusive policy (CSSEIP), Manipur University in collabora-
tion with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) also
expressed their desire to address the issue of domestic work-
ers in the region.
ILO Consultant said some of the scheduled
tribe and Adivasi girls and boys from Assam's tea garden go
for domestic work in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and
figure is on the rise.
Citing some of the case studies of
domestic workers mostly below the age of 16 years, he said
this trend was discovered during one of the recent study
conducted in three Assam districts-Sonitpur, Lakhipur and
Demaji bordering Arunachal Pradesh.
Coen Kompier, Specialist �International standards ILO for
South Asia while sharing his view point on domestic work
informed the gathering that implementation of part to address
these issues is a big challenge.
In his key note speech, Prof
E Bijoykumar coordinator of CSSEIP opined that the women
workers are not stable all the time in case of Manipur saying
that they are the first to leave the market.
But their major
source of the livelihood have been shifted from other sector
to construction sector,he felt.
Earlier the workshop was inau-
gurated by Vice Chancellor of the Manipur University Prof
HNK Sarma.
Later a discussion session was also moderated by Prof
Virginius Xaxa Deputy director Tata Institute of Social Sci-
ences, Guwahati Assam .
