Late Hav Thangjalet Haokip of Churachandpur was honoured by 27 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Red Shield Division by organizing a football tournament in his memory.
A press release from the PIB (DW) stated that the daredevil Non commissioned officer, who belonged to 11 Assam Rifles, was deployed in Tamenglong district and was personally responsible for eliminating four insurgents in a fierce operation on the night of 13 May 2009. The gallant soldier made the supreme sacrifice conforming to the highest traditions of the Indian Security Forces and was awarded Shaurya Chakra (posthumously) for his conspicuous bravery, undaunting courage and fearless determination in fighting the insurgents.
The event has been named after the courageous warrior as "Thangjalet Memorial Football Tournament" and is scheduled from 14 Sep 10 to 22 Sep 10.The was made open to the local clubs with vide publicity for over a period of two months and has received encouraging response with the draw of lots held on 07 September 10.The teams have high regards for the martyr and the tournament assures exhilarating and electrifying matches exhibiting the talent of Churachandpur with a ceremonial kick off by Master T William Lalgunlen Haokip, son of the martyr.
The tournament would generate awareness about the Armed Forces as would also unite the different tribes of the region and help promote peace and harmony at the grass root level in the district.
