Manipur Police assisted by Central security forces are trying to make education sector a free zone, said Director General of Police, Y Joykumar today, addressing a gathering at the formal surrender ceremony of six underground cadres at IGAR(S) complex, Mantripukhri.
Six more underground cadres of different outfits including three from PLA laid down arms before Director General of PoliceY Joy Kumar and Inspector General of Assam Rifles Maj Gen CA Krishnan today taking the number of underground cadres surrendering to authorities to nine in the past two days.
Three cadres of the banned People's Liberation Army (PLA), two of Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and one of United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) surrendered with arms to the Assam Rifles.
The surrendered three PLA cadres were Laishram Priyobrata alias Meino Meitei (32) son of Laishram Rupachandra of Chairel Khongnang Leikai Village of Thoubal District, Huidrom Awangamba (23) son of Khomei of Sandang Khong Village of Thoubal district and Lance Corporal Haobijam Ganeshor alias Sanahan alias Lamyanba (19) son of Haobijam Prem of Sugnu Napat Village of Bishnupur district.
The lone UPPK cadre was identified as R K Naocha alias Indrajit (27) son of late R K Angoushana of Chajing Narang Konjin Maning Leikai of Imphal West District while the two KCP cadres were Private Keikrujam Ngongo @ Tondonba (20) son of H Amuba of Sugnu Napet Villageof Bishnupur District and Private Ningthoujam Dolen alias Chinglen (21) son of N Khoidum of Napet Mayai Lambi Village of Bishnupur District.
They surrendered with one AK-47 Rifle with magazine, three 9 mm pistols with magazines and an M-16 with magazine.
Addressing the surrender ceremony, DGP, Y Joykumar alleged that extortions from teachers of colleges and schools located within the greater Imphal areas were carried out by overground members of underground outfits.
Drug addicts and widows were also used by them to deliver demand letters.
They were paid for their services, he said �Government is taking up necessary corrective measure to check it and to make education sector a free zone,� the DGP said.
Further speaking on the occasion the DGP welcomed the youth to the mainstream of civil society and said the peaceful surrender of the cadres with arms would definitely be a guiding beacon for militants not in SoO with government, to follow suit and bring peace and harmony in the state.
IGAR (South) CA Krishnan addressing the media said that such surrender events would further pave the way for other misguided youth to follow suit.
Family members of the surrendered cadres witnessed the surrender programme.
They expressed gratitude to the Assam Rifles in ensuring the misguided youth to get back into the mainstream in time and to avail an opportunity to lead a better life, a statement of the IGAR (S) said.
In the current year s many as 58 militants have surrendered to IGAR(South), 49 of them with arms.
The surrender of these militants is the outcome of long and sustained efforts by 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR(South), in motivating the relatives and militants to enable cadres to join the mainstream, the statement further maintained.
