Landslides hit Sambu area, villagers blame contractor for poor work

Ukhrul, July 15 2017:
Villagers from Sambu Area have blamed PMGSY contractors for causing all the hardships in transportation of goods and movement of people from one place to the other even to extent of causing landslides in the area, specially during the monsoon season .
Due to the sloppy work of the contractors, the PMGSY road that connects sub-divisional headquarters Sahamphung with Ukhrul district headquarters, which is the sole connecting road, has been cut off due to landslides at many points between Zingshui village and Chamu village, said the villagers .

The heavy rains may have been the immediate factor for triggering the landslides, but the sloppy work of the contractors has only added to the gravity of the situation, they added .
Speaking to this correspondent, president of Sambu Area Committee, Gideon decried the poor PMGSY works executed by the contractors alleging that they never adhere to the PMGSY guidelines .
Member of the Sambu Area Committee Aleng said that the landslides are due to the absence of proper drainage system .
Apart from poor construction, there is no such thing as maintenance, they said and added that they have already submitted complaints and petitions to the authority concerned .
The landslides have completely cut off Sahamphung for the last two weeks, they added .
As things stand today, villagers of Zingsui, Roni, Ronshak, Matiyang Sahamphung, Chamu etc are facing acute shortage of daily essential commodities like food grains, medicines etc .
The Sambu Area president urged the State Government to immediately bail out the villagers and extend all possible assistance .
In another incident, paddy fields at Hunphun/Ukhrul have been destroyed after water from the nearby river overflowed and mud slipped from the upper slope.
A village leader Honpam Raleng said that the over flowing water has destroyed the standing crops .
Another village elder M Luikham said that the water current has breached the constructed mud bunds and the fish reared in their field have escaped.
