Expressing concern over the prevailing extravagant electioneering for the Imphal Municipal elections, Senior Citizens for Society is set to intimate the matter to the Election Commission of India.
Speaking at a press conference held at its Nagamapal office, former Minister Dr M Nara said that a team of the Senior Citizens for Society would meet the EC authority to inform about the lavish canvassing tomorrow.
He said that some candidates even distribute tokens to voters for boozing at local liquor vendors.
Dr Nara added that some candidates even dare to bribe the voters with hefty amount ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 per elector which is against the guidelines of the EC.
Society President N Binoy opined that the root cause for corruption is extravagant electioneering.
Saying that maximum money is spent in this year's Municipal elections N Binoy observed that Manipuri society would go to the wrong path if it is not stopped.
He urged the voters not to get carried away with the promises of the candidates who shell out more money in canvassing but to elect the right and competent candidate.
He also urged all concerned to make the election free and fair.
Saying that Indian democracy is getting murkier day after day Vice-President I Lalit stressed on the need for election reforms to check the changing scenario.
General Secretary I Sadananda said that there is serious need for a check in using muscle and money power in politics.
The elections must be made free and fair in order to strive for a better society.
