Imphal, April 30 2014:
The Humanist Party of India, Manipur State Council has lauded President of India Pranab Mukherjee for acknowledging that Manipur is a 'conflict' state.
Yambem Biren, general secretary of the Humanist Party of India, Manipur State Council said the comment of the President of India was a positive step.
On Tuesday, President Pranab Mukherjee during the inauguration of the 14th Convocation of Manipur University in Imphal while appealing the youth of Manipur said, " Let the dark days of violence and conflict be left behind" .
Yambem Biren said President of India Pranab Mukherjee is the first Indian leader to have used the term 'conflict' in describing Manipur situation.
He said that the people of Manipur should laud the President of India for acknowledging the Manipur conflict situation.
Meanwhile, Yambem Biren said that the Government of India forcibly made Manipur to join its Union through the controversial Merger Agreement of September 21, 1949 at Shillong.
He said since then the rights of the Manipur people have been suppressed.
The conflict situation of Manipur became very pronounced then but the Indian leaders refused to acknowledge the situation here in the state as 'conflict', said the Humanist Party leader.
Yambem Biren accused the Government of India of taking over Manipur not through the proper channel.
According to Yambem Biren, there have been gross violations of the rights of the Manipur people by the Government of India for a long time now.
"We will soon submit a detailed report on the issue to the United Nations Organisation (UNO), the President of India and the Prime Minister of India," said Yambem Biren.
