Imphal, April 30 2014:
An indefinite chakka bandh has been called along Imphal-Jiribam road beginning 7 pm of May 7 by the Joint Forum for Transport Welfare, Tamenglong District (JFTW) to protest against the Government's failure to develop a road stretch on the National Highway-39 .
The indefinite chakka bandh has been announced following Manipur Government's failure to develop the 39 km long road section of the NH stretching from Khongshang to Tamenglong district headquarter, JFTW said in a statement Wednesday.
It said all construction works being taken up by the Public Works Department (PWD) and NF railway Construction Company will fall within the purview of the chakka bandh.
A memorandum urging the State Government to develop the Khongshang road stretch was reportedly submitted to Chief Minister O Ibobi by the Forum on April 17 following which Ibobi assured April 27 as deadline to meet the demand, the statement issued by DM Joshep, secretary JFTW said.
It added that the Chief Minister has failed to meet the demand even after the deadline was expired.
It also said that the memorandum to the CM was jointly signed by JFTW, village chief, student bodies, frontal organizations, women organizations, Village Authority Council, Village Chairmen Association, Tamenglong and Land ownership Auction Committee NH-39 .
The memorandum to the CM also mentioned that the State PWD should not be allowed to take up the road development work, instead the task should be given to BRTF.
It further urged the CM that proper compensation should be given to the people whose land have been acquired by the Government for expansion of the Khongshang road section.
The statement warned the Government that it should be responsible for any unwanted incident that occurs during the proposed chakka bandh.
