The existence of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) completed 37 year today.
Scribes celebrated the day at Manipur Press Club, Major Khul with veteran journalist and former news editor of ISTV, K Madhumangol as chief guest.
AMJWU president, Khogendra Khomdram presided over the function which was marked by an observation of a two-minute silence to pay respect to the departed soul of Samurailatpam Gopal Sharma, editor cum proprietor of Poknapham daily.
Gifts were presented to veteran journalists, AK Sanaton, Yambem Laba, Leihaothabam Sharatchandra, Dinamani Haobam, Kangujam Modhumangol and Meisnam Modumangol.
Speaking as chief guest, K Madhumangol urged young journalists to locate those veteran journalists who have retired from work and interact with them saying many of them are still living.
He also recalled that renowned writers Elangbam Nilakanta and GC Tongbra were popular journalists of their time.
However, this is yet to be recognized by journalists.
"We need to know them," he added.
He also called upon the working journalists of today to discharge their service sincerely exhorting them that in the prevailing chaotic situation of the state their role is of great importance.
Senior journalists also need to guide their juniors in the correct way to enable them to work with commitment.
Veteran journalist, AK Sanaton lauded the commitment of working journalists of today saying that it is a difficult struggle to work as journalists in such a place ridden with corruption where truth has vanished.
Yambam Laba said the media is the most powerful tool of communication which can construct or destroy societies.
Only when the scribes work with sincerity, society can be lead to a right direction.
The president of AMWJU, Kohgendro Khondam, appealed the journalists not to be distressed n discharging their duties and to file true reports of what is happening in the society.
