First deaf school inaugurated in Mizoram

The Deaf School of Mizoram was inaugurated on Thursday by Social Welfare Minister, PC Lalthanliana.
This school is the first of its kind in the State and is located at Rev S Lalmuana building, Vaivakawn, Aizawl.
Established on May 11 this year, the Deaf School of Mizoram is a huge step taken towards creating education opportunities for the deaf and dumb, said the Minister.
He praised the Hearing Impaired Parents' Society of Mizoram(HIPSOM) for their effort in making this project a reality and said the State Government and HIPSOM will work together towards further advancement of the school.
Though the school may not be ideal as of now, there is hope that it will soon be a central funded school and HIPSOM and the teachers should strive for this aim.
He also gifted two computers.
Social Welfare Director, Laldini said the Social Department is grateful for the initiative taken by HIPSOM.
The use of American Sign Language will prove of great help to these children who can make use of it to speak their thoughts and help them lead a normal life.
It will be useful for them to get qualifications and take up their roles at the government offices, she said.
The director also mentioned of vacant teacher seats and the requirement for more trained personnel.
The Deaf School of Mizoram will teach classes 1 to 8 using the American Sign Language.
The school has 5 teachers and currently enrols 19 students comprising of 8 boys and 11 girls from all over Mizoram.
Children also showcased their various talents to entertain the audience.
