Many celebrate International Women's Day

All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) celebrated the International Women's Day at its headquarters in Imphal today.
Professor N Nahakpam Aruna Devi, Department of Manipuri, MU, secretary general AMSU (HQ) Anil Soibam, former finance secretary AMSU Chingakham Premita, advisor AMKIL Khangembam Anandi attended the event organised by the Women's wing of the AMSU as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, secretary general of AMSU Anil Soibam said that the Women's Day observation first started in the United States in 1909.In 1908 in US, large number of female garment workers went on strike in protest against the poor working conditions.
The following year (1909), The Socialist Party of America declared the first National Women's Day in honour of the workers, he said.
Later, first official International Women's Day was celebrated on 19 March 1911.Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland were among the first countries to mark the day, he said.
During world war-I, women in Russia staged a strike for "Bread and Peace" in protest against food shortages and for peace which put pressure on the emperor Tsar Nicholas II forcing him to abdicate.
The provisional Government then granted Russian women the right to vote, he said.
In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day on March 8, he added.
He also recalled the Nupi Lan of 1904 and 1931 and the bravery and sacrifice of the women.
He lauded and encouraged the women for their roles in shaping the society.
Women have always been in the forefront in major issues of the State, he said.
Kanglei Ima Lup (KIL) also observed the International Women's Day at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
President KIL RK Sanahanbi, International Awardee H Ibotombi Khuman, Dy SP CID (Security) Jenee, Principal College of Nursing, Medical Directorate Professor M Kumudeni Devi and advisor KIL Advocate N Binodini attended the observation as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, secretary KIL Samjetsabam Ongbi Memcha Leima lauded the courage of the Manipuri women and said the she is proud that the world has recognised the spirit and bravery of the women in the field of art, culture and sports among others.
United Living Trust, Achou Public Foundation Trust and Universal Development Authority observed International Women's Day at Khwairamband Phouoibi Ima Keithel.
Khwairamband and Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagatpa Lup vice president Khwairakpam Mangi Devi, Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagatpa Lup treasurer Chabungbam Ibeton Devi, Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham amadi Saktam Kanba Lup treasurer Kongbrailatpam Pakpi Devi, United Living Trust secretary L Khulna, Achou Public Foundation Trust secretary Th Ashalata Devi and Universal Development Authority president Khaidem Chaobi Devi attended the event as presidium members.
AR observes International Women's Day
Units of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) organised a series of activities in various parts of the Imphal valley to observe the International Women's Day today.
Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association (ARWWA), ladies of 9 Sector Assam Rifles visited an orphanage run by EMA Foundation at New Keithelmanbi.
The orphanage has 14 children in the age group of 1 to 10 years and runs on a mere income generated by selling chicken and ducks, said a statement of PRO IGAR (South).
Shubhra Kabthiyal, president ARWWA, 9 Sector Assam Rifles gifted Rebati Haokip, who is running the foundation with her husband Doujalal Haokip, a sewing machine, rations and eatables to children and assured every possible help in future.
District Administration Chandel too celebrated the International Women's day at Indoor Stadium, Chandel district today.
The function was attended by the DC Chandel Krishnakumar, DFO Chandel SL Niangthianhoi, DAO Chandel Ts Gladney Monsang, Project Director NERCORMP Chandel Lilyrose Jajo, District Horticulture and Soil Conservation Officer Honey Chara and retired SDO Chandel Rebeca Wangler, SDOs, SDCs and DLOs.
A painting competion and special dance programes were organised by ZEO Chandel L Nabakumar.
