Ukhrul, September 11 2014:
Ramungo Library Group, Ukhrul organised a deliberation session on the impact of prolonged imposition of AFSPA in North East States in Ukhrul today.
Senior Citizens Forum, Ukhrul member Rev Myjob said that the draconian law is being imposed in NE States on the pretext of countering insurgency movement since past 56 years.
However, instead of controlling the armed movement, this controversial Act has allegedly become the reason for setting up of many new armed outfits as human rights violations were rampant under the cover of this draconian Act, he added.
Rev Myjob exhorted the people of all the whole North States to launch a collective stir to press the Government to repeal the Act and save the life of Irom Sharmila.
Elaborating his opinion point by point on the issue, he also stressed on the need to join Sharmila's campaign by the people of these States.
Saying that AFSPA was initially imposed in the hill areas of Manipur, Rev Myjob said that the Act was later enforced in valley areas as well after it witnessed the rise of insurgency movement.
Maintaining that political parties could not do anything other than mentioning the issue in their election manifesto, Rev Myjob said that people must press the Government collectively to root out the Act.
Human rights activist Hungyohung while speaking at the function questioned why Section 144 CrPC was imposed and additional security forces deployed in Ukhrul instead of booking the assassins of ADC Member Nganlangzar Malue.
He questioned why the people of Ukhrul should pay the price for assassination of the ADC Member.
In his speech, social activist Ramthar mentioned the sufferings, endured by Irom Sharmila during her movement of 13 long years.
Ramthar opined that Sharmila's demand must be endorsed by every citizen of the NE States.
