Imphal, October 10 2020:
The Hunphun Shanao Long (Hunphun Women Union), Ukhrul has appealed the Tribal and Hill Areas Development Minister to intervene and initiate steps to expedite the construction of a modern library at Pettigrew College, Ukhrul.
The union, in a statement said that it was very fortunate for Pettigrew College, the only Government college in the district to receive funds from NEC to construct a library.
The amount earmarked for the project is Rs 227.45 lakh and the first instalment of Rs 45 lakh was released on May 8, 2017 before the actual work commenced in April 2018, it said.
Another Rs 50 lakh was also released on January 30, 2019 but the work is moving at a snail's pace and running behind schedule, the union said with concern.
The construction of the modern library at the college was conceived to bring tremendous benefits to the students as well as the teaching faculty, it said.
However the prolonged delay in completing the project is robbing the students of the opportunities and benefits, it continued while appealing the Minister concerned to intervene and initiate steps from his end to make sure that the library is completed at the earliest.
Otherwise, there can be an outcry from the public and unwanted misunderstanding may come up, it said while adding that the union does not want to see students being deprived of the opportunities.
