Imphal, November 23 2013 :
Barely a week after portion of a ceiling caved in at RIMS, Manipur College today witnessed a similar incident at the ground floor of Chemistry Block.
Speaking to reporters, Principal Dr Kh Jayanta Kumar said that construction of ground floor of the block began in 2009 by contractor K Ranjit of Sega Road when Dr A Lalit Singh was the Principal of the college.
However, construction work halted from 2010-2012 as the building was constructed without formal work order, the Principal claimed.
Saying that the building was lying unattended for around three years, the Principal opined that the building might become weak due to it.
Zoology student Laiphrakpam Gyaneshwor, who is also the general secretary of AMSU Imphal West, said that many students had already informed the Principal and last student's union through written applications repeatedly regarding possibility of breaking down of the said building.
Although, students were scared of the weak condition of the building, they were compelled to sit inside the building for the sake of their academic career, he added.
Gyaneshwor added, it was fortunate that nobody was injured in today's incident.
He urged the authorities concerned to award contract works to sincere and credible contractors only.
He demanded that the college authority repair the damaged portion of the building at the earliest.
