Kabigai Gangmei of Sibilong was released yesterday after he and Namkhaolung Gangmei of the same place were arrested on the grounds that they were suspected to be involved in the gun snatching incident of August 29 from IRB personnel.
Rongmei Students Organization, Manipur and three other organizations have demanded immediate release of the other.
Addressing mediapersons at Manipur Press Club chairman of the student organization Gaan Rongmei said, following the gun snatching incident at Sibilong, 23 Assam Rifles wreaked havoc trying to arrest two innocent civilians of the village on mere suspicion on September 1 midnight.
After womenfolks of the village intervened to stop the Assam Rifles personnel, they were severely assaulted and many of them were molested, he alleged.
Many of them sustained injuries on the head, chest, back and legs.
The student body along with Rongmei Naga Youth Organization, Rongmei Naga Council and Rongmei Luh Phuam (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland) strongly condemned the atrocities committed on the villagers of Sibilong, he added.
While president of Rongmei Luh Phuam, Panti Golmei said that the four organizations sent an ultimatum to the State Govt to release the two individuals without any conditions by Sept 10 .
After one among the two was released, the four organization has decided to suspend any form of agitation that was planned earlier for some time after the State Govt gave some form of positive response to the plea of the villagers.
She said that AFSPA has given the power to the Assam Rifles to do whatever they like.
The 23 AR should apologize to the villagers of Sibilong and to the entire State for their misconduct.
Such incidents should never happen in the area of Sibilong and the student body will work to ascertain how the gun snatching incident happened, she added.
