The 20th Loktak Day was celebrated today at Loktak Lairembi Lampak, Thanga, Bishnupur district under the aegis of Loktak Day Celebration Committee, Thanga with the theme Save Loktak Lake.
Meanwhile, another Loktak Day function was also held at Komlakhong IB Complex, Mayang Imphal.
The occasion at Thanga was graced by Chief Whip of SPF government and MLA T Mangibabu as the chief guest.
The president of the function was ex-minister and president of Loktak Lake Development Organisation H Sanayaima while the resource persons were retired Chairman of Loktak Development Authority (LDA), Thokchom Mahinar, retired Reader Dr Khagembam Samu and Principal of Kumbi College,
K Jugeshore.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA T Mangibabu said the Day has been observed in order to spread awareness on the preservation of Loktak Lake from its deteriorating condition.
He appealed the people to spread far and wide the need for the preservation of Loktak lake.Children of Ideal English School, Thanga Part II have presented play relating to the need for the preservation of the lake.
Various cultural items were also staged during the observance of the day.
Meanwhile, the 16th Loktak Day was also observed today at Komlakhong IB Complex under the aegis of the Loktak Day Celebration cum Conservation Committee, Mayang Imphal.
The Day has been organised in an attempt to preserve the historic Loktak Lake from extinction.
Education Minister L Jayentakumar, MLA Kh Ratankumar, MLA and MPCB Chairman, E Dwijamani,and MLA K Meghachandra graced the observance function as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister L Jayentakumar urged all concerned to contribute in preserving the Loktak Lake which is identified with the state while noting that it is not in its natural form.
He said, huge international funding will not save the lake from extinction without the wholehearted contribution of the people.
He said, a Central package scheme has been prepared for the installation of Inland Water Transport at Loktak Lake.MLA E Dwijamani said, the condition of Loktak Lake has become appalling as the people greedily think for their own benefits.
He said, the freshwater lake has been polluted with waste materials, pesticides, and other garbage while urging the people to conserve the lake by studying the natural life cycle taking place in the lake.
Calling the people to contribute for the conservation of the Loktak Lake, MLA K Meghachandra pointed out that Loktak Lake has generated electricity and it becomes an important tourists' centre.
