Minister stresses on homestay as means to promote State's tourism

Langei International and Department of Tourism, GoM kick started a three-day event, Native Flavours with the theme, "Celebrating the rich lineage of Tangkhul cuisine and tradition" at Langei village of Nongpok Sanjenbam yesterday.
Forest and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar, who graced the second day of the Native Flavours event as the chief guest, opined that the festival which is celebrating the rich lineage of Tangkhul cuisines and tradition will spread awareness to the masses regarding the Tangkhul culture and tradition.
He said the good hospitality of the people towards others visiting the State can further flourish the tourism sector which will help in expanding the livelihood of the people.
He said that the idea of promoting a community's culture and traditions can be implemented through homestays so that visiting tourists would get a chance to enjoy and learn about the authentic dishes, customs and traditions of the State.
Shyamkumar announced that, under the Forest and Environment Department, Rs 10 lakh will be handed over to Langei International for water conservation and environment protection including tree plantation.
W Ibohal, Director, Department of Tourism said that as a pilot project, Langei adopted Nongpok Sanjenbam Khunou and focused on community development which has in turn boosted the prospect of rural tourism for the area.
He further said that the effort of the Langei is recognized by the State Government and a discussion will be held for further upgrading.
Altogether 15 stalls displaying different cuisines of Tangkhul were opened.
The inaugural event yesterday was graced by Arun Enterprises proprietor Thangjam Arunkumar as the chief guest with Langei International chairman Telem Arunkumar as the functional president.
Arunkumar had stated that the festival portrays the brotherhood and the strong bond between the Meiteis and the Tangkhuls.
