Naoriya Phullo remembered

The 124th birth anniversary of Naoriya Phullo, the torch-bearer of the Meitei revivalism movement was observed today at different places across the State.
Fitting tributes were paid to the champion of the indigenous Meitei culture, religion, language and traditions at the birth anniversary function held at the compound of Ibudhou Khamlangba at Sagolband Moirang Leirak Machin.
The function was graded Speaker Th Lokeshore, Apokpa Marup leader Mutum Joykumar and Meetei Marup leader Khoirom Kerani.
MLA RK Imo and social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram were also present as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Meetei Marup secretary Y Chingkheinganba Luwang described Naoriya Phullo as a historian and a nationalist all rolled into one who worked relentlessly to save the Meitei community by reviving their culture, religion, language and customs from the throes of complete disappearance.
Naoriya Phullo was born on the 22nd day of the Manipuri calendar month Thawan of 1888 at Laishram Khun, Jaribon, Cachar.
He set up the Apoka Marup in 1930 and embarked on a journey to save the indigenous culture, tradition, religion and language of the Meitei community who were then under an all pervading influence of sanskritisation and Indianisation.
He wrote and gifted 19 different books to the society.
His works like Wakoklon, Shakok etc are priceless gifts to the society.
MLA RK Imo said that he would put in his best efforts to include a chapter on the life of Naoriya Phullo in the school curriculum so that the younger generations can understand Naoriya Phullo and his contributions to the society.
Dr Dhanabir Laishram remarked that Naoriya Phullo's ideas and concepts were highly philosophical.
The birth anniversary of Naoriya Phullo was also observed at Awang Potsangbam Khunou under the aegis of the Meetei Marup.
After hoisting the ceremonial flag followed by certain rites and rituals, fitting tributes were paid to Naoriya Phullo.
