Imphal, December 06 2013 :
In connection with the ongoing International Fortnight Protesting Violence against Women, a discussion session on the topic 'Denial of Justice in Manipur' was held today at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound.
The discussion session was jointly organised by Women Action for Development (WAD), North East Dialogue Forum, united NGOs Mission-Manipur, New Life Foundation, Resource Upliftment Centre for human Interest, Conflict Widows' forum Manipur and People's Platform Secretariat.
Stating that the Fortnight observance is being held since 2003, WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam said today's topic 'Denial of Justice' is aimed at highlighting violation of human rights by security forces and involuntary disappearances of many youths due to continuous imposition of AFSPA in the State.
Pointing out this year alone there has been 121 cases of violence against women and about 100 trafficked children rescued from various cities of India, Sobita expressed serious resentment that with the exception of rescue efforts the Social Welfare Department is yet to come up with a viable policy to ensure that children do not become targets of human trafficking.
Of the many incidents of outraging modesty of women/girls, only the Jangthailu Kamei case could be considered as justice delivered.
As the resource persons, advocate L Sevananda elaborated on 'Roles and duties of a police officer in registering a criminal case', Assistant Profession of MU's Department of Economics Dr Chinglen Meisnam on 'Denial of justice with special reference to crimes against women in Manipur', and social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram on 'Civil societies response to denial of justice by the State' .
Testimony sharing by family members of four victims of violent incidents was another feature of the programme.
