Imphal, March 28, 2010::
The tribal students in Manipur University (MU) rued over the slow pace of the state government in implementing the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU).
Manipur University Tribal Students Union (MUTSU) is mainly pointing at the 'undue delay' in the process of the land acquisition for the construction of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University at Makhan, Sadar Hills Division of Senapati district, though it was officially inaugurated by chief minister O Ibobi Singh on September 9, 2009. According to MUTSU, vice-chancellor of the IGNTU, Amarkantak, in his reminder letter on February 7, 2009, June 13, 2009, had persistently requested the government of Manipur to complete the process at the earliest so that academic session starts on time.
Meanwhile, MUTSU in its memorandum on 28 this year, submitted to the chief minister of Manipur, had also reminded to complete the same process as early as possible so as to facilitate the start of academic session by April this year itself.
"However, all the pleas are kept in abeyance, thus the exact status of the said process remains hidden and pending till date.
It is worth to be reminded here once again that the Manipur University had witnessed an interrupted academic atmosphere for the last three consecutive years (2007, 2008, 2009) when deprived tribal students vehemently protested against the discriminatory attitude of the government and the University authority on this section of students which had resulted finally to the establishment of the present campus of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University.
Initially, the tribals got a sight of relief as they perceived the largest parts of their grievance were addressed.
Yet, sincerity and willingness are still lacking from the side of the government of Manipur.
The Government of India indeed has completed all the necessary clearances on their part and the fate of students are now spinning in the hands of the government of Manipur.
We wonder how the process of acquisition of this small piece of land had consumed such a pretty long time.
This clearly shows inefficiency and ineffectiveness of the government of Manipur to complete all the pending processes of land acquisition," alleged the MUTSU statement on Sunday.
The tribal students then questioned the state government regarding the result of the written test of combine preliminary examination for the recruitment of various posts conducted by the Manipur Public Service Commission which was held way back in the September 21, 2008. MUTSU said that it would closely watch the response of the government of Manipur to this problem and take the help of like minded students organizations, NGOs, and civil organizations to stage various demonstrations and agitations until the government acts positively on this pending issue.
