Federation of Government College Teachers' Associations, Manipur has submitted its suggestions on the Draft National Education Policy (NEP), 2016 to the Union HRD minister.
The Association has suggested that NEP should contain specific policies for border States of North East India including 100 % financial support by the Union Government, establishment of more National institutes, hike in scholarships andNnational exchange programs which can promote higher education in the region upto the National standard.
Institutional financing with matching grant by the Government, creation of corpus funds, ensuring autonomy and accountability are the other suggestions.
Instead of Indian Education Service, creation of State Higher Secondary Education Councils and State Higher Education Service in the States are more relevant, it added.
The Association appreciated the NEP's proposals of concurrent teaching both in UG and PG levels by the college teachers, constitution of a Central Educational Statistics Agency, collaboration and exchange programme of Indian Universities with foreign universities.
On school education, the Association suggested that school curriculum shall include plural culture, diversity, inclusive history and geography of India.
It accepted NEP's proposal to make mother tongue or regional language as the medium of instruction upto class-V.The common curriculum should be in Science and Mathematics only and Social Sciences and languages including English be left to the States, it suggested.
The Association emphasized that the NEP 2016 is relevant to the society having strategies to support the border States of North East and meet the requirements of 21st century India.
